Freedom 251: Your 5-Point Cheat Sheet to the Rs. 251 Smartphone

Ringing Bells, a relatively new local handset manufacturer, has announced a phone called the Freedom 251 that they will be pricing at an unbelievable Rs 251! That’s less that a McDonalds meal, or an evening at the movies at your local multiplex.

The phone is expected to be launched by Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar on 17 February.

Speaking of the phone’s disruptive pricing, the Noida-based company stated, “The Ringing Bells ‘Freedom 251’ launch is in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for empowering India to the last person, transforming India’s growth story.”

Founded last year, the company has already launched one of the country’s cheapest 4G smartphones priced at Rs 2,999, along with two other feature phones. Ringing Bells is aiming at full indigenous production of the phones over time.

Details of the phone have just been released: a 4-inch WVGA IPS screen, 1.3GHz Quad-core processor, 1GB RAM, 8GB internal storage, dual SIM 3G cellular, a 3.2MP rear camera and 0.3MP front camera, all running on Android 5.1 Lollipop.

This launch sets a new benchmark in terms of smartphone affordability in the Indian market which happens to be on the verge of surpassing the US to become the second-largest global mobile market, and bodes well the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Make In India initiative.

  1. Ringing Bells, a little-know Noida-based company, has launched what it is calling India's most affordable smartphone, but Freedom 251 might well be the cheapest smartphone in the world. Here's what you need to know about the Freedom 251.
  2. Ringing Bells had announced earlier that the Freedom 251 will be priced at "less than Rs. 500". But we can now confirm that the smartphone will be priced at Rs. 251 (less than $4). At that price, it's easily the most affordable smartphone in the world.
  3. The website also lists important specifications of the Freedom 251: 4-inch display, 1.3GHz quad-core processor, 1GB RAM, 8GB internal storage (expandable up to 32GB), 3.2-megapixel back camera, 0.3-megapixel front camera, and a 1450mAh battery.
  4. The Freedom 251 will be officially unveiled in New Delhi on Wednesday evening at an event that will be presided over by Dr. Murli Manohar Joshi, MP, with the Union Defence Minister Sri Manohar Parrikar as the Chief Guest.
  5. Ringing Bells says the Freedom 251 smartphone has been developed 'with immense support' from the government and is touting it as a success story of PM Modi's flagship 'Make in India' scheme.
  6. A smartphone priced at Rs. 251 will go a long way in connecting every Indian, and like the previous government tried to take computing to the masses with the Aakash tablet, the Freedom 251 has the potential to realise the 'Digital India' vision.

Bookings for the Freedom 251 open on February 18 at 6am and close on 21 February at 8pm. The company says deliveries will be completed by 30th June 2016. The Freedom 251 will be available via its website.
